Game 105 : Bautzen May 21st 1813

This game turned out to be larger than I envisaged. It had, on paper, 200 French battalions, most of which got deployed!

The pics are in no particular order simply because the Blog is playing up tonight. Needless to say, lots of figures and fighting.

The above pic shows the French left centre assaulting the Allied line. The French for this battle had a far greater number of infantry than the Allies, but their class was low. The Allies had a Cavalry superiority but the French Cavalry present was good. In the pic, the Cavalry to the right are the Guard Heavies.

The above is just to the right centre of the French line. Just off the top are some gentle hills with redoubts and the wood in the centre of the pic proved to be a problem for the French to take. The French were eventually able to use their numbers to force the wood.

This is a French assault on the central village of the battlefield. Again, numbers would eventually tell and the village would fall into French hands.

This shows the French left flank where two Corps of French infantry arrived. There was a fight for the village but the Allies retired as nine French infantry Divisions were arrayed against it.

A nice shot showing the fighting in the centre and the French Cavalry feeding through to attack the Allied centre. The troops density is clear, finesse was not that usual

This pic was taken at the beginning of the battle. It shows that the full table is being utilised. I would have shown more pics but the Blog decided to scramble the order that the pics were placed and trying to move them once loaded is a real pain. But, hey ho, better luck in the next article. The overall battle had a historic feel, the Allies being forced from the field, but not broken. As per usual, I've included the casualty table.

Some formations were very severely handled! MacDonald never got deployed as he had no room!! The Saxons arrived but only marched to reinforce the French centre.

We had the usual recognisable faces playing, we all agreed it was a busy, but enjoyable game. Until Quatre Bras!!

  1. The scale certainly does show the scope of a battle.

  2. The beauty of the scale is that "Divisions" look like large masses of infantry and the Cavalry Regiments actually look like regiments.
