Game 115 & 116 : Battle of Brienne, Jan 29th 1814

We last played this game in 2015, it spookily seems as it was not that long ago! This game was played twice, each of us getting to play each side over a weeks wargaming. The pics are from the first game, simply as I took the majority of pics over the first battle.

The above shows the French advance on Brienne, at the top of the picture, and Old Brienne at the bottom left. You can also see the Allied gun line, 48 guns if I remember correctly.

The advance on Old Brienne has the affect of fixing the Allied army in place. The Allies must hold this area to be able to stay on the battlefield.

A huge battle for Brienne itself. Three French Divisions are involved in the assault, one directly on the village, the others on each immediate flank.

Back at Old Brienne, the French are struggling to gain control of the combat. The Allies are executing well controlled counter attacks and the battle remains in the balance.

The French Guard Cavalry decide the battle in favour of the French. They advance between Brienne and Old Brienne and sweep all before them, after a fight of course. The casualties show that the French did not have it all their own way.

A pic demonstrating a very rare occurrence in the 11 years we have been in the Situation Room. A single Sotnia of Cossacks hits a retreating French battalion in the rear, exactly what they were employed for!! The hurrahs were loud and long!!!!!

Heavy casualties all round. Remember, 30% really equates to combat ineffective!
